APACHE Coming off a 1-9 season, Coach Larry McDaniel's Apache Warriors were determined to get off on the right foot this time. It was mission accomplished as the Warriors had seven different players score touchdowns en route to a 47-0 thumping of Walters in the season opener at Dan Chandler Field Friday night.
"This team has a totally different mentality than last year," McDaniel said. "With that 1-9 record eating at them, they are committed and goal-driven."
Apache showed its commitment by stuffing the Blue Devils and forcing a three-and-out on the game's first possession. Walters' punt traveled only 13 yards, giving the Warriors a first down at the Blue Devil 29.
It took only four plays for Apache to reach the end zone. Damian Toles swept to the right end for nine yards. Colton Huggins ran around left end for six more. On first-and-10 from the 14, Jalen Domebo was thrown for a three-yard loss by the Walters defense. On the next play, Dereck Pewo burst over right guard and sped 17 yards for the touchdown. After Daniel Coffman's point after kick was blocked, the Warriors led, 6-0 with 8:03 left in the first quarter.
Apache forced another three-and-out on the Blue Devils' next series and stopped Walters' punter Bruce Abbe on a fake attempt, taking over again deep in Blue Devils' territory at the 28.
