CHICKASHA It was a successful day at the Class 4A state volleyball tournament in Chickasha after both Cache and Elgin advanced to the semifinals with wins over Weatherford and Bethany, respectively.
Cache
Jada Vernon and Britnee Altic led No. 3 Cache (28-7) to a 3-1 win over No. 6 Weatherford with some stellar play. The set scores were 25-19, 19-25, 25-20, 25-22.
Tied at one set apiece and at 20-20 in the third set, Cache and Weatherford played a long rally. Both teams had several kill attempts blocked and both made unbelievable saves. In the end, Cache got the point on a kill by Katelynn Martine and that seemed to spark the Bulldogs as it won the next four points to close out the set.
"That was the longest rally we have had the entire year," head coach April McClung said. "Martine's great shot down the line moved us forward. That play got us going for the rest of the match."
The fourth set was nip-and-tuck just like the other three as the lead was never larger than three for either team. The teams traded points until Cache took a small lead at 9-7 behind a Jordan Dodson kill and an error by Weatherford prompting the Eagles to call a timeout.
Coming out of the timeout, Weatherford tied it at 10 as Madison Eyster recorded one of her 16 kills. The Eagles took a 14-11 lead behind two kills from Eyster and one from Taylor Terry. Cache's Vernon responded with a kill and Cache worked back to a 14-all tie. The teams would tie once more at 15 before Cache took some control.
