MARLOW The Jones Longhorns unleashed mammoth quarterback David Cornwell and a rock-ribbed defense against the Marlow Outlaws in the District 3A-1 opener here Friday night with the result ending in a 28-0 Longhorn victory.
Cornwell, who stands 6-5 and weighs 215, directed an efficient spread offense to two first quarter touchdowns and then let the defense take care of most of the rest of the evening.
Jones' first possession started at its own 25 after a 19-yard kickoff return by Andrew Case. The drive lasted three plays. Cody Noll ran a jet sweep around left end for 16 yards. After a procedure penalty backed up the Longhorns five yards, Cornwell hit Levi Fox for 18 yards to the Outlaw 46. On first-and-10, Cornwell rolled out to his right and showed his arm strength by firing a strike to Randal Case at the five with Case covering the remaining distance to the end zone. Nathan Lee kicked the first of four conversions to give Jones a 7-0 lead with just a little over a minute gone.
The Longhorns added another TD just before the end of the first quarter when Taylor Bilyeu completed a nine-play, 53 yard drive with a four-yard sweep around right end to make the score 14-0.
The Jones defense kept Marlow's offense under wraps for most of the first half, forcing four punts and intercepting Outlaw quarterback Wakley Bergner on the one possession where the Outlaws approached the red zone.
On Marlow's fifth possession, the drive began on its 34-yard line. Bergner sandwiched two 23-yard pass plays, one to Kelby Richardson and one to Rylan Skinner around an incompletion to set the Outlaws up at the Longhorn 24. Two running plays netted two yards. On third-and-eight, Bergner got the snap prematurely and recovered for a two-yard loss. On fourth down, Bergner tried to go for it all but Randal Case picked off the pass and returned it 31 yards to the 32 to end Marlow's only threat of the night.
