CACHE The rivalry between Cache and Elgin is just as fierce during a volleyball game as it is during a football game. Thursday night in Cache, patrons got to see it come alive in Elgin's 3-1 victory over the Bulldogs.
Class 4A No. 1 Elgin (24-0) won 25-20, 25-23, 19-25, 25-19.
"Cache is hard place to play and they have a great squad," Elgin head coach Lindsey Mickley said. "They don't let the ball hit the floor anywhere, but I felt my girls stepped up to the plate, accepted the challenge and did what they could."
With the Owls entering the third set, the Bulldogs, who had been scratching and clawing in the first two sets, got some strong play from Jada Vernon and used a lot of Elgin errors to take the set.
The Owls jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the set thanks to two kills by sophomore Jentry Holt and one each from Magan Castlebury and Sam Grubb. No. 3 Cache (19-8) responded by winning 12 out of the next 16 points thanks to two kills and a block by Vernon and an ace by Brooklyn Sullins. Cache led 14-10.
Elgin closed the gap to two points three different times in the remainder of the set, but couldn't get any closer. Vernon and Sullins added kills along the way.
