First Christian Church will hold fall Picnic in the Park
First Christian Church Lawton invites community members to bring out their families, lawn chairs, blankets and footballs for its fall Picnic in the Park Oct. 1.
This is the third Picnic in the Park event for the church. Brand Johnson, senior pastor, said the church tries to have the picnic twice a year, one in the spring and one in the fall. The picnic takes place at the 35th Division Park, corner of Northwest Columbia and Northwest 6th Street, and is one of the church's many outreach ministries. It is geared toward getting the church out into the community, building relationships and fostering spaces of community.
"Basically it's a park close to the church," Johnson said, "and we're trying to be good neighbors and foster spaces where people can come together, share their stories and get to know one another. And it's a way for our church folks who don't live in the area to get out and know who actually does live in the areas. So it's that basic philosophy of loving your neighbor that we think is deeply rooted in the Gospel."
The picnic is free and open to anyone in the community and will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The church will provide hot dogs, chips, cookies and water picnic-type food. There will also be games, music and attendees have the chance to win a $25 gift card to Wal-Mart. The church will raffle off four gift cards. Johnson said more people have attended the picnic with each one, and at the picnic this past spring, the church served 150 hot dogs.
