Lawton firefighters and the Lawton Fire Marshal's office are observing Fire Prevention Week by making sure children know how to stay safe.
Firefighters visited Whittier Elementary Thursday morning to show a fire truck and a rescue truck to students in kindergarten through second grade. The younger children got to see firefighter equipment and learn what firefighters do.
All of the students at Whittier also had the opportunity to go through the Fire Marshal's Fire Safety House, a trailer that looks like a typical house or apartment on the inside, but can produce harmless artificial "smoke" to simulate a fire.
Assistant Fire Marshal Ray Brown said the marshals give each group of children a basic safety lesson inside the house. They tell them to always know at least two ways to get out of their homes, and have a plan to meet at a safe place with their family members outside their house if they must evacuate due to a fire or other emergency.
