Investigators released the scene on Wednesday and confirmed the man's identity. Robert Eugene Barnes, 65, died in the explosive fire. The state medical examiner's office is also continuing its investigation and hasn't released the cause of death pending the outcome of an autopsy.
Barnes' home, near the intersection of Minnesota and Walnut streets in Temple, was engulfed in flames when first responders arrived shortly after 2 p.m. The initial call reported an explosion. Though Temple firefighters put the inferno out quickly, the 800-square-foot house was a total loss and Barnes was dead amidst the charred rubble.
It was confirmed by the State Fire Marshal's office that there was a fire and explosions but attempts are being made to pinpoint which came first.
