ELGIN Elgin High School students are raising money for a good cause, and having fun in the process.
Students who are members of the student council have organized a week of events to raise funds for a 5-year old Elgin student named Shane who is battling cancer.
He has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma and is undergoing tests with the possibility of receiving a stem cell transplant from cells doctors harvested from him in December.
"We always try to do a project in the spring to benefit someone in the community, " said Student Council Adviser Crystal Cunningham.
While the students have organized a number of fun activities throughout the next eight days, area residents can also help out.
From 8 a.m.-noon on Saturday the students will be holding a garage sale in the southeast high school student parking lot and are encouraging everyone to come out and "Shop for Shane."
On Friday, March 15, the Billy Sims Barbecue restaurant in Elgin will donate 10 percent of all sales for anyone who mentions to the cashier they are there for "Supper for Shane."
Student Council Vice President Hannah Cummins said this is a group effort.
"We need everyone's help to make a difference and we are just asking everyone to help any way they can," she said.
On Sunday, the students will be gathering for a Lair Battle, vying to see who can tell the tallest tale, from 2-5 p.m. at Osborn Park. Tickets to participate will be sold today and Saturday.
