OKLAHOMA CITY A center that focuses on making air travel safer is marking 50 years of operation in Oklahoma City.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said Wednesday that the Civil Aerospace Medical Institute has affected everyone who has stepped onto an airplane in the last half century.
The institute trains pilots and flight crews on how to escape from aircraft crashes and works to develop safer equipment, such as improved airplane seats.
The center conducts crash tests and other research on how to build aircraft components that can better withstand crash impacts.
Facilities at the center include forensic toxicology laboratories, altitude chambers, flight simulators and other research equipment.
