Barbecue, salsa will be judged
ALTUS The Main Street Altus program will sponsor the 2012 Cotton Pickin' Chili Cook-Off scheduled for Oct. 6 on the Jackson County Courthouse square.
Registration and setup for the cook-off in the chili, barbecue and salsa categories will start at 9 a.m. with testing kits to go on sale for $3 each at 10 a.m. and judging to begin at 11 a.m. Competition by division in those categories will include individual, student, retail, civic/non-profit, commercial, financial, government/military and church. Entry fees will be $20 for first entries and $10 for each additional entry.
Chili entries will be judged on criteria such as aroma, color, consistency, taste and after taste, while barbecue entries will be judged by aroma, color/smoking, tenderness, taste and after taste. The salsa judging will be based on aroma, eye appeal, texture, taste and after taste.
Awards will be presented at 1 p.m. with trophies and cash prizes to be presented to the top three winners in the chili and barbecue categories and Grand Champion for first place chili and barbecue category entries. There will also be awards to the top three winners in the salsa competition along with prizes for top winning booths in both the large and small divisions along with spirit and overall spirit awards for winning booths.
