New-look County tournament sets seeds
The meeting room inside Great Plains Coliseum never held too many mysteries in years past when coaches got together to seed teams ahead of the Comanche County Tournament.
Things were different Monday.
Geronimo was named the top seed in the boys bracket for the first time in years, and Chattanooga snared No. 1 in the girls bracket.
Cache and Elgin won 27 of the past 34 girls and boys championships, but withdrew from the tournament after last season. Now the treasured local event ventures into new territory in its 77th year with a small-school look, new top teams and a wide-open title chase.
How different are things in the County tournament these days?
Geronimo and Indiahoma the top seeds in the boys bracket were sixth and seventh, respectively, a year ago. They were the bottom two seeds two years ago.
"We don't know how long it's been since a Geronimo boys team has been a No. 1 seed. I couldn't even remotely guess, but we're real excited about it," Geronimo boys coach Donald Youngstedt said.
