Girls take stage at County Tourney
One of the most balanced girls fields in recent history will be on display Monday when the Comanche County Tournament begins at the Great Plains Coliseum.
The tournament, now into its ninth decade there is no official record of when the first games were actually played but microfilm shows action as early as 1932 will start Monday with four girls games, including top-seeded Fletcher's matchup against Frederick at 6:20 p.m.
Fletcher girls and Indiahoma were voted as the No. 1 seeds during a recent meeting of coaches.
Girls will play four games Monday and Thursday and the boys take center stage Tuesday and Friday. Championship, third-place and consolation games in both divisions will be played Saturday.
Fletcher's girls earned their No. 1 seed on the basis of a 5-0 record against the County field. The Wildcats are 9-6 overall. FHS will meet Frederick (3-8) at 6:20 p.m. Monday.
Geronimo (7-8) and Sterling (4-9), the 3-6 seeds, open the four-game card at 5 p.m. No. 2 Walters (4-7) meets No. 7 Chattanooga (4-11) at 7:40 and No. 4 Indiahoma (6-10) faces No. 5 Big Pasture (4-11) at 9 p.m.
