Empire, Cache headline ‘Week Zero’

Like every other avid football fan, I was itching for the season to start.

Much to everyone's delight, the 2017 high school football season finally kicked off on Friday. Several area teams were in action this weekend, but many won't get the ball rolling until this Friday.

Here are a few things that stood out in the odd 'Week Zero.'

Kudos to Empire.

It had been almost two years since Empire had won a football game. Yes, you read that righttwo years! Two years ago, I was still in college.

Empire finally got back to its winning ways on Friday when the Bulldogs beat Temple, 46-0. That deserves a round of applause.

Not only did the Bulldogs beat Temple, they destroyed them. Empire hadn't won a game since defeating Central High on Sept. 25, 2015.

To win your first game in nearly two full seasons has to be a freeing feeling. To do so in style and run up the scoreboard must be exhilarating. Those players and coaches should be very proud. Congratulations to Empire.

Though it faces a tough road test against Cyril, Empire will look to build a winning streak starting this Friday against the Pirates.
