County tournament week finally here for area teams

Let the games begin. Tournament week is finally here and with four big county tournaments  Comanche in Lawton, Caddo in Anadarko, Stephens in Duncan and Tri County in Altus  there is plenty of hype surrounding intriguing matchups. Here's another look.

Comanche County

Winners of 18 straight games, No. 5 Indiahoma in Class B (18-1) may be the clear-cut favorite to win the boys bracket in the Comanche County Tournament, but the Warriors know it will be no cakewalk  especially knowing every team is craving a crack at taking down the top dog.

"In the tournament, if you have one bad night, anyone can upset you," Indiahoma coach Zac Gipson said. "I was telling the guys today, 'Everyone wants to beat us because we have that target on our backs.' So they're gonna bring their best game. That Big Pasture/Sterling game is going to be really good and whoever we get out of that is going to be tough."

Indiahoma opens with Fletcher on Tuesday at 6:20 p.m. and, should they advance, will meet Big Pasture or Sterling in Friday's semifinals.

In their final tune-up before the tournament, Indiahoma got a practice run on the same court they'll be playing on this week, beating Geronimo by 14 on Saturday at the Great Plains Coliseum. The night before, Gipson was talking to Chatty coach Nick Gable after Indiahoma picked up a 26-point road win at Chatty.

"I was telling him that it's almost scary at this point because we haven't lost in so long," Gipson said. "I don't want us to lose one, but I don't want us to develop that mentality of we can't be beat."
