'Baritone Favorites' light up stage
Maestro Jon Kalbfleisch and baritone vocalist Bob McDonald lit up the McMahon Memorial Auditorium stage Saturday night, serenading the Lawton-Fort Sill community with Broadway hits dating all the way back to 1942 in the second Lawton Philharmonic Orchestra bonus show of the season, "Broadway's Baritone Favorites."
Kalbfleisch, who is regularly seen with baton in hand, manned a grand piano center stage to accompany McDonald in a lovely, entirely fitting show opening with "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning," from Oscar Hammerstein III and Richard Rodgers' "Oklahoma!"
The crowd, delighted to hear a bit of home, roared with applause.
Everyone thinks the tenors get the cool stuff on Broadway, McDonald told the crowd, but it's the baritones who truly get the best parts. He aimed to convince the audience, and did just that by the end of the show.
Hammerstein and Rodgers would be featured several times throughout the night and, as expected with most Kalbfleisch productions, interesting pieces of musical history about the Hammerstein and Rodgers duo, as well as many others were imparted along the way.
