Artistic extravaganza will benefit city arts community
Save the date and shop Small Business Saturday. You could find yourself destined for a far out holiday artistic extravaganza that benefits the community.
The Lawton-Fort Sill Art Council will host Hippie Holiday from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday at its headquarters, 1701 NW Ferris. Children can visit with Santa from 2 to 4 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. There will also be a coffee and hot chocolate bar with the proceeds going to the Art Council.
Previously an annual event, it's been a while since the last popular holiday shopping festival.
"Hippie Holiday has been on a hiatus for the past couple of years, but we're back and we're better," said Becky Parks, event coordinator. "Our purpose is not just to raise funds for the Lawton-Fort Sill Art Council and to help our vendors make sales" but also to encourage everyone in the community to "shop small."
Vendor items include jewelry, wreaths, candles, painting, yarn and fabric art, sweets, baked goods, and confections, handmade personal care items, woodworking and metal art.
"It's so important for citizens to shop with local merchants and artisans to keep those dollars here in the city of Lawton and the surrounding area," Parks said. "As always, all merchandise is handcrafted by local artisans."
Among the artists and vendors signed up for the holiday are The Cosmic Nomad, Hooked!, Biker's Blend Beard Company, Lazy B Metal Art, Shine On Tattoo, Jenny Perry Mosaics, Zen Sunrise Creations, Sophisticated Sweets, Josh Cargill, Erin McDaniel, Hank Poppe, Martine Poppe, Crystal John, Whitney McConnell and Anthony Fontaine.
The Cosmic Nomad's Lindsey Morris said prior Hippie Holidays have always been positive experiences. The embodiment of the hippie aesthetic, her artistic creations run the gamut from jewelry to clothing and prints. The range of creative talent, from food to housewares to artistic pieces in various media, makes the show an ideal place to find something unique to give for Christmas presents or to treat yourself.
