Texas firm opens doors in Duncan

A Houston-based company that does business around the globe formally opened its newest facility Wednesday in the North Duncan Industrial Park.

Total Safety, which provides training, equipment and expertise in ensuring safety for clients, especially in the oil and gas industry, has had a presence in Duncan for a couple of years but opted to grow into one of three new buildings constructed in the industrial park by the Duncan Area Economic Development Foundation. Foundation President Lyle Roggow said two other companies, Completion Science and Southern Petroleum Labs, are slated to be occupants in the other two buildings when they're ready.

Darrell Whitley, Total Safety's senior vice president for market development, said being offered the opportunity to move into a turnkey, tailor-designed building made it easier for the company's officers to decide to expand operations in Duncan. It also made sense to locate more resources in the Midwest. Already, he said, the Duncan location has contributed to Total Safety earning business in Kansas and West Texas.

About a dozen to be employed

Total Safety will employ a dozen people full time in Duncan, but Whitley said the company will supplement that number, hiring contractors both from the local area and outside the area. The company has employed about 3,000 people worldwide and does business in 140 locations, including in 14 countries in the Mideast. Though a preponderance of its business is oil and gas related, Whitley said Total Safety also provides safety training, equipment and expertise in incident response for other customers in chemical, mining and construction industries.
