Medicine Park slates Water Fest

Saturday should be fun, informative

MEDICINE PARK  Medicine Park's newest festival this weekend will be all about water.

The aptly named inaugural Water Festival, organized by the Friends of Blue Thumb, will run from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. Organizer Kurtis Koll said Blue Thumb will have several educational display booths set up either in front of Town Hall, along the cobblestone wall or in the parking area in front of the Main Stage.

"One is going to relate to watershed production and another is going to be essentially a bug collection with damsel flies, dragon flies and their larvae," he said. "There will be another that shows the field kits our volunteers use when they go out to take care of their assigned creeks, which they do monthly."

The informational festival is aimed at raising awareness for the safety and quality of Oklahoma's creeks, streams, rivers and lakes. The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation should be on hand with a large aquarium on a trailer that will showcase some of the game game fish that are available in Southwest Oklahoma. Koll had originally asked area elementary schools to create presentations that showcase the importance of water quality in the state, but he wasn't able to organize that aspect of the festival in time.
