Man arrested after police standoff in Altus

ALTUS  A 37-year-old Hobart man wanted on outstanding warrants from two counties was arrested by Altus police following a four-hour standoff Thursday at a local apartment complex.

Altus Police Chief Tim Murphy said officers went to Apt. 8 at 1407 N. Thomas at around 10 a.m. to arrest the suspect, who was wanted on several outstanding warrants from Greer County. The suspect refused to open the door and was believed to have been in possession of a firearm. After negotiations failed, officers deployed tear gas but the suspect still failed to exit the apartment. Officers then forced entry but were unable to locate the suspect.

After an extensive search, the suspect was found hiding in a crawl space under the complex which was accessible from the inside. He was arrested around 2 p.m. and taken to the Jackson County Jail.
