Chili champs to be crowned in Fletcher

FLETCHER  A group of five competitors will battle for chili superiority for a good cause.

Benefit for youth softball teams

Donna Bebo organized the inaugural Fletcher Chili Cook-off set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Fletcher Community Center. She wanted to come up with an eye-catching fundraiser to benefit the town's youth softball teams. This is the first year the town has enough participants to field three full teams, and that costs money.

"This is our very first year in a very long time that any of us can remember to have teams for each age group for 8 years old, 10 years old and 12 years old," Bebo said. "We've been trying to build our league up and our girls need equipment."

Teams from a local church, community organizations and local businesses signed up to compete for the first-ever chili championship trophy. Bebo expects a wide variety of chili recipes from some very talented cooks. Tickets are $6, which purchases a bowl of each chili, a drink, a dessert and a judge's ballot.

"The people buying the tickets are going to get to be the judges," she said. "You get to taste each one of the chilis and then you can put your decision on the judge's ballot and turn it in."

Desserts are being donated by many of the softball mothers, whom Bebo promised are excellent bakers. There will be plenty of sweet items to counter that chili heat.
