Cache loses thriller
CACHE Weatherford and Cache squared off in a key District 4A-1 contest at Ulrich Stadium Friday night that was important to the playoff hopes of both clubs.
The Eagles built a 14-0 lead in the first half before holding on for dear life to escape with a narrow, 14-13 win when a pair of Cache gambles didn't pay off.
Cache scored a touchdown with 2:15 left in the game to make the score 14-13. A swinging gate play for the two-point conversion failed leaving the Bulldogs behind by a point.
" I made the wrong decision," said Cache head coach Faron Griffin. "We should have gone for one point instead."
On the ensuing kickoff, Hayden Nunley recovered Nathan Angiel's onside kick at the Eagle 44. The Bulldogs were unable to move the ball and a fourth down incompletion sealed the victory for Weatherford.
Weatherford took the opening kickoff and marched 80 yards in eight plays. Eagle quarterback Jaxon Ratterree hit Britton Nichols with a screen pass to pick up a third-and-13 to keep the drive alive. Later, on a third-and-14 at the Weatherford 49, Ratterree connected with Ethan Downs on a swing pass that Downs turned into a 51-yard touchdown. Brian Whitfield kicked the extra point to put the Eagles ahead, 7-0 with 8:39 left in the opening quarter.
In the second period, Weatherford went on another long drive, this time 90 yards in eight plays. This drive featured another key third down play. Facing a third-and-13 from his own seven, Ratterree hooked up with Braden Teasley for a 44-yard pass play, taking the ball to the Cache 46.Five plays later, Ratterree bootlegged around left end for a 15-yard TD. Whitfield again kicked the conversion to up the lead to 14-0 with 7:44 to go in the half.
One of the stranger kickoff returns occurred on the ensuing kickoff. Jayden Garcia took the kickoff at his own 11 and proceeded to make a very good return before he fumbled forward around the Cache 40. Several players from both teams had shots to recover the ball before Angiel scooped up the bouncing ball and made his way down the right sideline breaking a tackle at the five before pushing his way into the end zone. Ralph Fawaz booted the conversion to make the score 14-7 at the 7:26 mark.
