Apache handles Velma-Alma

Cache loses at Weatherford; Cyril falls

Ringling was stunned by Elmore City-Pernell a few weeks ago in what was assumed by many to be a top-heavy district that wouldn't offer any surprises. Apache didn't want to suffer that fate at home Thursday against Velma-Alma.

The Warriors made sure they didn't, cruising to a 38-6 victory over the Comets. Apache moved to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in District A-3. Velma fell to 1-6 and 1-3 in the district.

Apache is scheduled to travel to Empire next week, but Empire had to forfeit its game this week against Rush Springs due to low numbers. Empire athletic director Tony Roberts was cautiously optimistic on Tuesday, saying he believes the Bulldogs will be healthy enough to resume the schedule.

Cache slips at Weatherford

Cache quarterback Jayden Garcia threw for 229 yards and accounted for three scores, but the Bulldogs fell 34-28 at No. 10 Weatherford.

Weatherford built a 21-0 lead in the second quarter before Cache rallied. Garcia hit Landen Abbott for a 34-yard touchdown, then Cache used a Devin Pauley interception to set up a 47-yard scoring catch by Kivan Rice to make it 21-14 at halftime.

Cache tied it at 21 using an approach that was successful many times last year  quarterback J'air Thomas hit fellow quarterback Garcia for a 15-yard touchdown strike with 4:53 left in the third.

But Weatherford marched down the field for a quick score, then recovered a muff punt inside the Cache 9-yard line. The Eagles used the short field to make it 34-21.

Cache scored late in the fourth quarter to make it tight, but couldn't get a turnover in the final minute to regain possession.
