CU hosts ACU in key LSC matchups

Games just don't come much more important than the ones Cameron University 's men's and women's teams have this afternoon. From here on out, it's all about seeding for the Lone Star Conference Tournament. The Aggie men, who snapped a four-game conference losing streak with a 56-52 win over Angelo State last Wednesday, hope to build off that momentum, while the CU women will try and rebound from a heart-breaking 54-53 overtime loss to the Rambelles when the two teams entertain Abilene Christian University in a conference doubleheader today at the Aggie Gym. The women will tip off at 2 p.m. with the men to follow at approximately 4 p.m. D-I transfers everywhere It's hard to figure out why the Wildcats are just 2-9 in the conference. With four Division I transfers and another outstanding junior college move-in, the Wildcats have the potential to be in the conference's upper echelon. Nobody knows the Wildcats' potential better than Aggie head coach Wade Alexander.

Lawton High hosts Ike; Mac entertains rival Duncan

This is it, time is running out for the three Lawton boys basketball teams to make an impression with the OSSAA, which will be trying to decide next week where to locate the eight regional tournaments in both Class 6A and 5A. Eisenhower boys are ranked No. 7 in 6A, but that could be in jeopardy when the Eagles visit No. 12 Lawton High tonight. Ike won in an earlier tournament meeting but this is the first of the home-and-home games, plus it's the final week before the regional assignments are made. The girls game at the Wolverine Gym begins at 6 p.m., with the boys to follow around 7:30. There is an equally-important boys game at the Mac Gym where Duncan comes calling for a 6 p.m. doubleheader between 5A rivals. Mac is ranked No. 5 despite being just 9-7, while Duncan is at 13th with a 12-7 mark.

Football signings: One hectic day

Alabama may have the nation's top recruiting class this year but the Crimson Tide did let one player slip out of its their and that player was MacArthur's Daniel Schwarz, who finally opted to honor his commitment to Tulsa but not without a great deal of consideration. As late as 1 p.m. Schwarz was still answering calls from Alabama's coaches, eager to try and land the services of the 6-2 kicker. In fact, when fans started arriving for Mac's signing celebration, his name was not on the board with all the others because nobody was quite sure what his status was during the day. Finally, just before the signing ceremonies were to begin, his name was placed on the board with Tulsa spelled out in big blue letters and thus the suspense was finally at end. "I probably got four or five calls from both of them, Alabama and Texas, plus just as many from Tulsa wanting to know when I was going to sign," Schwarz said. "It was just tough to decide. You have two great programs and they were saying all the right things and it just kept getting tougher and tougher to decide."

Tigers roll by Highlanders; Mac girls win

For the MacArthur Highlanders, Tuesday's games were a chance to work things out. For the boys, it was a chance to get a big win over another Class 5A opponent. For the girls, it was a chance to work on the things they need to for the playoffs. For one of those teams, the Mac girls, it was mission accomplished with a 47-31 win over Ardmore. For the boys, things certainly didn't go as planned as Ardmore rolled over the home team, 58-38. Boys "We just had a really poor performance on a very big night, and now we have to pay the fiddler for that," Mac head coach Kevin Harrington said. It was a game that was supposed to go a long way toward making MacArthur one of the teams to host a regional. It was a game that if they won, it would send a message that the Highlanders were not to be messed with come playoff time.

Ags open season,host East Central

The Cameron baseball team suffered a heart-breaking end to its 2011 season losing to Southeastern 7-6 in 14 innings in the Lone Start Conference title game. Today the Aggies start their quest to do what they barely failed to do last season: make the Division-II NCAA tournament. Cameron hosts East Central University today in a doubleheader that starts at 1 p.m at McCord Field. Senior Mike Carlson will start the first game on the mound. It is his first start since 2010 when his season ended early due to injury. Carlson is back this year after having Tommy John surgery to repair his elbow. "He was 5-0 and throwing well before he got hurt," head coach Todd Holland said. "It'll be nice to see him back out there." The pitching staff wasn't all that impressive last year, except for Ricky Cramer who led the team in ERA with a 2.45 mark. He's not around this year so it falls to Carlson and fellow righty James Rhodes to pick up the slack.

Cameron faces Angelo St.

The women tip off at 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m. The ASU men have won their last two games and are coming off a 72-60 win over Texas-Permian Basin in non-conference action.
Recruiters looking far into future

Today is the national signing day for NCAA Division I football programs and as strange as this might sound, the most recruiting hype being shared on the message boards doesn't even involve a senior; it features Lawton High School's D.J. Ward, a junior defensive end who is still a year away from signing. That in a nutshell is how recruiting works these days. Coaches are recruiting one, two, even three or four years out, trying to figure out where their strengths and weaknesses will be during that span. While it may be the trend, it's not one we have to like. In my opinion it puts more pressure on a young athlete over a greater period of time. Since the time Ward's name first popped up on Rivals' list of top 100 sophomore prospects, he's become a hot commodity, with coaches coming to campus in steady droves and calling even more often. Today should be all about this year's seniors, not the future classes, but the college coaches have to stay up with each other and that means looking ahead.

Calm before the storm here for area sports

Last week and this week are the calm before the storm of the sports year. Think about it, there's really nothing going on that is considered big time. It's really the only time in the year you can say that, unless you aren't a baseball fan in which case July and August are the bane of your existence. The NFL conference championship games were last week and then it's a two-week break until the biggest sporting event of the year. What do sports fans have in that two week period? Regular season college basketball (wake me when it's conference tournament time) and regular season NBA (yawn, though slightly less since there is a pro team in Oklahoma). Once Super Bowl Sunday comes around, things start to pick up. Following the Super Bowl, high school basketball playoffs start, followed by post-season college basketball in March. Then baseball starts and the NBA and NHL postseasons begin. Next Sunday starts a great run of sporting events. So the only thing to really pay attention to this week is high school basketball. Luckily for high school sports fans, it has been a compelling season thus far. Here's hoping this final full week of the regular season continues that momentum. Let's get to some storylines. Fort Cobb outlasts Cyril Friday night, the Fort Cobb boys were able to escape a game against Cyril with a win. Fort Cobb beat Cyril, 31-30, when Bryan Lewis broke Cyril's press and found Dylan Circles with 15 seconds left. Cyril standout Tyler Stafford missed a shot at the buzzer.

Mac boys pound Altus; girls fall

ALTUS MacArthur's boys got scoring from nine different players, including 20 from Darius Graham, as the Highlanders coasted to a 75-58 victory over Altus Saturday evening in a battle of Class 5A teams. Earlier the Altus girls used a big edge in the middle two quarters to subdue the cold-shooting Mac girls, 49-28. But for the Mac fans who made the trip west, things picked up in a hurry when the Highlanders exploded for 22 first-quarter points and then proceeded to roll over the outmanned Bulldogs. Altus got 18 from Mason Maahs but that wasn't enough to make it a contest. "We are pretty athletic and they just weren't able to match up with us in some areas," Mac coach Kevin Harrington said. "The thing I liked was that we finally had a chance to get some of our younger kids in there and see what they could do. The guy who caught my eye was Barry Williams, our 6-5 sophomore post.

CU splits with A&M-Commerce

COMMERCE, Texas Cameron University 's women limited Texas A&M-Commerce to a miserable seven percent shooting from the field in the first half and then when the hosts did start hitting some shots the Aggies drilled some big shots of their own to seal a 63-51 Lone Star Conference victory Saturday night. In the second game, Milt Garner scored 34 points but it wasn't enough as the host Lions pulled out a tough 76-69 victory in the second game. That one wasn't sealed until the final seconds as the Aggies launched a furious rally that fell just short. The Cameron women had a chance to really make things easy on themselves after building a 28-10 halftime lead, but they gave up 20-8 run to start the second half and with 11:43 remaining the margin was just six, 36-30, and the fight was on. "Sometimes when things seem easy, you get a little lax and I think that's what happened during halftime," CU women's coach Tom Webb said. "In the first half we played really well defensively; the ladies did a great job following the game plan. They guarded correctly and that forced them to take shots they didn't want to take.
